Corporate Social Responsibilty

Global Medela: "Shared Values Initiative" India

Medela’s"Shared Values Initiative" in India seeks to improve breastfeeding rates, human milk management and enhance educational standards for newborn care. This initiative is an official commitment to the Every Woman Every Child (EWEC) movement spearheaded by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.  A primary goal of EWEC is to supplement the work of WHO and UNICEF to reduce global neonatal mortality and morbidity.

Medela's initiative aims to enhance mother and baby health through the life giving benefits of breast milk. A simple intervention such as supporting breastfeeding within the first hour after birth has been shown to reduce neonatal mortality by 20%. Raising awareness of the value of human milk through education and training is an effective first step towards such practice improvement. To do this Medela will train specialists locally, who in turn will share their knowledge and skills with other healthcare professionals. Aligning with like-minded institutions will facilitate the expansion of activities that protect, promote and support breastfeeding and the appropriate use of human milk.

Sport, Culture, Women's and Newborn Health

In Switzerland, Medela supports the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, and the  "Theater- und Musikgesellschaft" in Zug. Medela also sponsors the women’s handball team, LK Zug (Swiss champions, 2013 and 2014), as well as the breastfeeding campaign and the Pink Ribbon Walk, and the Swiss Foundation for the Promotion of Breastfeeding.

Medela is a sponsor of the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) in their work to bring preterm infants and their families the dedicated and specialized care they need. Medela is currently producing, in collaboration with EFCNI, a NICU feeding brochure to be disseminated to key opinion leaders across Europe.

Every year Medela's subsidiaries and distributors willingly contribute to various corporate social activities. This dedication to supporting social works both within and outside of our markets is well respected by Medela's Global Management team.

Medela Cares

Medela Cares is a continuation of Medela’s long history of caring for moms, babies, communities and our environment in the US. The initiative focuses on two areas where pumping breastmilk is essential to successful outcomes.

In the Continuity of Care Program of Medela Inc. provides mothers with the same high-quality equipment they use at the hospital during their stay at a Ronald McDonald House®.  The Medela Recycles initiative allows moms who have finished their breastfeeding journey to help another mom start her own. Each personal-use electric Medela breastpump recycled through the program supports the donation of new hospital-grade Medela Symphony® Preemie+™ Breastpumps and breastfeeding supplies.

In the back-to-work transition, Medela in the US strives to support new mothers as they continue their breastfeeding journey when they return to work. The initiative informs mothers of their rights as well as the practicalities of breastmilk feeding and work.
